Komodo Edit

If you are looking for an editor with enough tools for editing code but none of the advanced and confusing features that a professional IDE application has to offer, then Komodo Edit is worth looking at. It is a lightweight version of Activestate's Komodo IDE, a powerful web development tool, with support for all major programming languages, as well as many other features. Komodo Edit provides similar functions, but it doesn't come with any IDE functionality, which makes it an ideal tool for editing code, without getting caught in advanced features which you may not need.

The well designed and customizable user interface enables you to work in a comfortable and elegant manner. Once you launch the application, you will immediately find a few quick links, as well as options for creating or opening projects, checking the general configurations and for other actions. You can also find a navigation pane, in which you can browse through local files and folders. The application allows you to bring up additional panes, for command output, notifications and syntax checking and for sample snippets, macros and other tools.

It is possible to create or open several projects simultaneously, on separate tabs. A minimap can be found in the main editing area, which makes it quite easy to navigate through huge code pages and to find specific segments. It is also possible to enable other helpful features, such as line numbers or indentation guides and you can even split the editing area, if you need to work on more than one file.

Besides snippets and common abbreviations, for various languages, you can find many other useful tools on the interface's right pane. You can find a wide range of macros, plug-ins, Rails tools or others and you can insert them just by clicking and dragging. Projects can be previewed at any time, within the application itself or on a web browser of your choice.
